hit up another William A Wellman double feature tonight - 1933’s Wild Boys of the Road & Heroes for Sale, both drenched in depression era gloom AND hope
Wild Boys centered on a trio of teens (and excellent Frankie Darro, Edwin Phillips, and Wellman’s future wife Dorothy Coonan, all pictured in the poster) who drop out of school and take to the railroads in search of a better tomorrow.  it’s well worth seeing, and you can see it here
Heroes follows WWI veteran Richard Barthelmess' plight from wounded solider, to morphine addict, to successful laundry man, who keeps encountering endless heartbreak and tragedy.  and yet, despite it all, he ends up giving more to mankind than he takes from it.  the film co-starred Loretta Young and Aline MacMahon
